Sipwise Community Edition (CE)
Sipwise Community Edition (CE) is the open-source version of our commercial C5 softswitch product. As the commercial version, the CE is designed for service providers, carriers, and enterprises to deliver various communication services, primarily focused on Voice over IP and Unified Communications.
Who is it for?
Sipwise C5 CE is ideal for companies, engineers and students to start experimenting with a fully-featured SIP-based VoIP service, without having to go through the steep learning curve of SIP signaling, integrating the different building blocks to make them work together in a reasonable way and implementing the missing components to build a business on top of that.
It also provides a reference implementation and integration of the latest features from the underlying core components like Kamailio and RTPengine, the world’s leading open source SIP and RTP engines.
Based on this implementation, people can extend the system to fit their particular needs, or use it as best practice implementation to learn about various use cases possible to build on top of these components.
Any time, operators can migrate seamlessly to the highly available C5 PRO appliance or to the scalable C5 Carrier platform with defined service level agreements, phone support and on-call duty for operating a serious VoIP business.
What is inside
Compared to other free VoIP software, the Sipwise C5 is not a single application, but a whole software platform — the Sipwise NGCP (Sipwise Next Generation Communication Platform) — which is based on Debian GNU/Linux.
Modules you will find inside:
- Administrative web interface
- Customer web interface
- Provisioning system through API
- Monitoring
- Billing and Rating system
- Call Routing
- Application Server
- Number Portability
In the past, creating a business-ready VoIP service included installation and configuration of SIP software like Sems, Kamailio, FreeSwitch etc., which can get quite difficult when it comes to implementing advanced features. It is required to implement different web interfaces, billing engines and connectors to existing OSS/BSS infrastructure. These things are now obsolete due to Sipwise C5, which covers all these requirements.
Using a highly modular design approach, the NGCP leverages popular open-source software like MariaDB, Redis, Nginx, Kamailio, SEMS, FreeSwitch etc. as its core building blocks. These blocks are glued together using optimized and proven configurations and work-flows and are complemented by building blocks developed by Sipwise to provide fully-featured and easy to operate VoIP services.
How to install
The Sipwise C5 CE can be installed in a few steps within a couple of minutes and requires no knowledge about configuration files of specific software components.
For production setups, C5 CE should be installed from Install CD (recommended). On existing Debian operating systems, instead, use the ngcp-installer. We also provide a Virtualbox image, a VMware image and a Vagrant Box for a quick system evaluation.
Please follow the instructions in the C5 CE Handbook in order to set up the system.
If you want to upgrade to a newer version from your existing system, please refer to the Upgrade Procedure contained in the handbook.
