Melita relies on Sipwise C5 Softswitch as a core network solution

Melita p.l.c. Malta is the operating company within the Melita group. They are focused on providing media and telecommunication services via HFC (Hybrid-Fibre-Coax) as well as nationwide WiFi network to tourists, households and business units in Malta.

The goal

In 2013, Melita was looking for a flexible and state of the art technology partner to collaborate with on their latest idea of offering cutting edge products and technology to their customer base and beyond their geographical borders also.

Their requirement was to provide an end customer device independent mobile communication tool (voice, video, chat, presence) on top of a new Class 5 Softswitch as a cost efficient alternative to considered IMS and VoLTE approaches. Since Melita had already been running a strong and robust nationwide network (fibre, HFC and WiFi), the base for this idea was already there.

The Sipwise solution

To achieve the goal, Melita turned to Sipwise as the chosen technology partner and their offered solution. This then enriched their existing core network with their NGCP (sip:carrier) in 2014.

On top of the base platform, Sipwise has developed, customised and branded a WhatsApp-like application for smartphones, enhanced the billing functionalities of the NGCP (for example IP source based billing, multiple tops up time windows, etc.) and integrated Class 4 Softswitch as well.

The results and benefits

The outcome of the collaboration between Melita and Sipwise was phenomenal. It resulted in being a very close partnership with a strong focus on future-proof technology and services such as WebRTC which turned out to be of high interest for the next step of their application approach. Furthermore, the deployment of Sipwise’s proven Class 5 Softswitch and Sip:phone brandable app, their existing customer infrastructure has been enriched.
